The Keswick Fairtrade Campaign celebrated thirty years of Fairtrade in the UK in a variety of ways involving a huge range of interested residents and visitors.
Throughout 2024 Fairtrade Fortnight, Keswick Library hosted a display of posters featuring Fairtrade producers and Fairtrade products available from Greggs, Lakes and Dales Co-op and Booths.
During the fortnight, twenty six local guest houses, bed and breakfasts and hotels which serve Fairtrade products received a certificate of thanks for their continuing support.
Jo Alberti spoke to a lunchtime meeting of Rotary Keswick at the Skiddaw Hotel about the history of and current issues in Fairtrade, mentioning the links between Keswick and Choche coffee farmers in Ethiopia and the projects which had been funded there through the Rotary Foundation.
Joe Human spoke at a public meeting in the Keswick Quaker Meeting House on “Coffee’s Brewing Crisis: the impact of climate change on your cuppa”, outlining how members of coffee co-operatives, who are able to sell their coffee into the Fairtrade market, benefit from a programme which helps them adapt and build resilience.
Residents of Lakehead Court in Keswick celebrated thirty years of Fairtrade in the UK by enjoying tea and cake with dislays of a selection of Fairtrade goods available in local shops and of Fairtrade products and gfts available from the Caldbeck One World Shop.
2024 Fairtrade Fortnight ended with the usual service, organised by Churches Together in Keswick, this year in the Southey Street Methodist Church and led by Martin Sleath of King’s Church.
